Aerospace Cluster

About the Cluster
The major components of the aerospace cluster includes aircraft manufacturing, guided missile and space vehicle manufacturing, and a few related components of instruments. This cluster vastly exceeds the average U.S. employment concentration ratio and the cluster is represented in a number of highly concentrated areas in the region.

What’s New: Governor’s Aerospace Council
On June 25th, the Governor's Aerospace Council and the Washington Legislature’s Aerospace Taskforce held a joint meeting to begin outlining an industry strategy for aerospace in Washington. The meeting was attended by over a dozen state legislators, and featured presentations on a variety of topics including: an analysis by Tom Captain of Deloitte Consulting on Washington's competitive position relative to other states; a discussion led by Mike Bair, vice president of Business Strategy and Marketing at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, on the future of aerospace; and a presentation by Tom Flavin, President and CEO of enterpriseSeattle and former Mayor of Burbank, CA, on the impact of the loss of aerospace in southern California. The Aerospace Futures Alliance of Washington – the statewide aerospace trade association created with the support of the Prosperity Partnership – has been asked to provide significant input in the formation of the Aerospace Council’s report, which will identify key short-term and long-term challenges and opportunities.

Aerospace Futures Alliance of Washington
An important outgrowth of the Prosperity Partnership’s work in the aerospace cluster has been the creation of the first-ever state wide aerospace association, the Aerospace Futures Alliance of Washington. This organization provides networking and advocacy for the hundreds of aerospace companies and suppliers in our state, and helps to support the sustainable growth and development of this vital cluster in our region. Cluster Strategy Development Background
In 2005, to target its work in supporting the aerospace cluster, the Prosperity Partnership formed an Aerospace Cluster Strategy Development Working Group tasked with identifying specific action initiatives to be implemented by 2010. A special thanks goes to the co-chairs of that working group:
