The Prosperity Partnership's first ever Roundtable Field Meeting played to a sold out crowd of over 60 participants and featured three Snohomish County stops: Berlex's biotech manufacturing facility, the Future of Flight Aviation Center, and the Boeing facility at Paine Field. The Prosperity Partnership is holding quarterly field meetings in each county to highlight economic assets to business, government, and community leaders.
The stop at Berlex in Lynnwood gave attendees a chance to learn about biotech manufacturing processes and an opportunity to see where and how products are made. Jack Faris of the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association provided a short overview of the importance of the life sciences the region, and explained the effort to implement Washington's newly created Comprehensive Life Sciences Strategy.
The tour proceeded to the Future of Flight Aviation Center, whose executive director - Barry Smith - is the chair of the Cultural Taskforce's Public Affairs Subcommittee. The Prosperity Partnership's Cultural Taskforce is an effort to increase access and participation in our region's cultural assets. Jim Tune, CEO of ArtsFund, gave attendees an overview of how arts and culture are an essential aspect of our region's prosperity, improving quality of life and helping to attract and retain the kinds of employers and employees that we need to be successful. Mr. Smith personally guided the tour of the museum, showing off its collection of aerospace technologies, including a section of fuselage from the new 787.
The centerpiece of the event was a lunch and roundtable discussion, hosted by the Boeing Company. Speakers included Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson, Carlos Veliz from PCSI, Rita Ryder from YWCA Seattle-King County-Snohomish County and Graham Evans of the newly created Washington Clean Technology Alliance. These guests and others guided participants through a discussion of the Prosperity Partnership's priorities for 2007, from the Minority Economic Development Working Group and the Regional Housing Strategy Working Group, to specific efforts in clean technology, aerospace, education and international benchmarking.
The day ended with a tour of the Boeing facility at Paine Field, where participants witnessed final assembly of the Boeing 777, and learned about Boeing's assembly strategies and workforce development needs.
The next Roundtable Field Meeting will take place in Pierce County on Friday, June 15. For more information or to register, contact Eric Schinfeld at (206) 587-5063 or eschinfeld@psrc.org.
