Draft Regional Economic Strategy for Central Puget Sound Released
Coalition sets agenda for taking action
The Prosperity Partnership—a coalition of government, business, labor and community leaders from King, Kitsap, Pierce, and Snohomish counties – today announced the release of its first draft of a regional economic strategy for central Puget Sound.
Launched last November by the Puget Sound Regional Council and its partners in the economic development community, the Prosperity Partnership has grown to include over 120 organizations. It represents the first time that community leaders from throughout the central Puget Sound counties have agreed to collaborate on a unified economic agenda for the benefit of the entire region.
"There are no guarantees that the Puget Sound region will be able to attract new businesses, or keep and grow existing firms. We can’t trust our future to luck, we must act. The strategy is our roadmap for changes and investments we need to ensure that the Puget Sound region continues to prosper."
-- PSRC executive director Bob Drewel.
The economic strategy development began when over 1,100 business, nonprofit, and government leaders convened for a daylong summit to discuss the region’s strengths and weaknesses. Leaders then formed five industry clusters and met for several months to identify specific initiatives, investments and public policy changes that form the core of the strategy.
Common initiatives needed by all industry clusters to be competitive are also identified including education, tax reform, new and small business support, transportation, and technology commercialization.
Even as the strategy was being developed, the Prosperity Partnership was instrumental during the 2005 legislative session in advocating for transportation improvements, enhancing the state’s position in life sciences job development and changes in state law designed to be catalysts for growth in clean technology and aerospace jobs.
The strategy is available for comments and refinements over the summer. In September it will be finalized and the focus will shift to increasing advocacy for policy changes and implementing action initiatives.
The strategy is available at www.prosperitypartnership.org.
