This Week in the Blog
Things You Are Going to Start Seeing a Lot More Of.
December 5, 2008
Include this.
So far, our region has been pretty lucky in terms of cultural institutions: attendance is still pretty good, and donations are holding for the most part. It’s a mix of the fact that the recession hasn’t hit our region as hard (yet?) and that a lot of the indispensable holiday stuff is happening now. There are a lot of families who aren’t going to miss The Nutcracker with their kids no matter what. But donations and attendance are going to suffer, and a lot of the institutions that have been teetering are going to start tipping.

Military and Tourism & Visitors Cluster Strategies Completed
The Prosperity Partnership is proud to announce the completion of regional cluster development strategies for two additional industry clusters - the Military Cluster and the Tourism & Visitors Cluster.
The Military Cluster Strategy focuses on four initiatives:
- Understand and support the military mission in Washington state and at individual bases through a permanent working group;
- Enhance employment opportunities for military spouses and veterans through legislation and partnerships;
- Improve education opportunities for military personnel, spouses, and children; and
- Use business attraction, retention, and expansion strategies to expand the region's defense contracting industry.
The Tourism & Visitors Cluster Strategy is also composed of four initiatives:
- Secure approval to expand the Washington State Convention and Trade Center (WSCTC);
- Create a major global health summit and celebration to be held sometime in 2012;
- Develop the infrastructure and support to improve the international visitor's experience in the Puget Sound region; and
- Develop and promote a "Puget Sound destination experience."

Washington Clean Technology Alliance releases New Film and Website Highlighting the "Washington Clean Tech Story"
Washington Clean Technology Alliance (WCTA) has collaborated with local filmmakers Hal Calbom and More Dust Than Digital Films Communications to produce a documentary film and online campaign as part of a year-long effort to help raise awareness about the state of the clean tech industry in Washington. On November 20th, WCTA presented a premiere screening of Evergreen: the Washington Clean Tech Story, an hour-long documentary film about our state's clean tech past, present and future. The film was shown to a packed house at SIFF Cinema, McCaw Hall in Seattle.
Simultaneously, the Evergreen production team launched the companion website - evergreenfilm.org - an online video archive of footage and interviews with Washington's clean tech leaders. It features highlights of over forty conversations with clean tech leaders in Washington including the Governor, mayors, entrepreneurs and green collar workers, as well as an extended visit with President-elect Barack Obama.
The project will also highlight the policy initiatives which must be taken on if we wish to see this industry grow. The Evergreen film and project is aimed at demystifying the concepts of "clean tech" and "green economy," and helping community members and policy leaders gain a balanced perspective of the industry. To learn more and to sign up for monthly email blasts of clips and interviews from our state's clean tech leaders, go to evergreenfilm.org.
Evergreen is a joint production of the Washington Clean Technology Alliance and Seattle's More Dust Than Digital Films.
